Ground flaxseed has a great nutty taste, is inexpensive, and it offers huge health benefits. You may have seen it and wondered what it was or you may never have heard of it before - but if you want to be as healthy as you can be - you should give it a try. Found in your nearby Hannaford's Nature's Place this food is a nutrition powerhouse.
What nutrients can flaxseed give to me?
Omega 3 fats, which help protect against heart disease, stroke and cancer. Soluble fiber, which help lower cholesterol and triglycerides. It also helps stabilize blood sugar. Insoluble fiber, which prevent constipation. Lignans, which may help to protect against breast and prostate cancers.
How to eat flaxseed?
Find it in our Nature's Place aisle at your nearby Hannaford either in whole seeds or already ground. If you have the seeds you do need to grind it using a coffee grinder or a spice mill. Otherwise, the smooth seeds will pass right through you and take their nutritional benefits with them. Ground flaxseed will stay fresh for a day or two in the refrigerator and for a month in the freezer. But don't eat more than two tablespoons in a day; any more, and all of that fiber may make you feel bloated.
Cooking with flaxseed:
You can bake with flaxseed. Heat does not take away any of its benefits. You can also use freshly ground flaxseed or meal in place of wheat or oat bran when making muffins, pancakes, waffles, and bread. However, you cannot use flaxseed oil for cooking. Heating the oil does destroy its Omega 3s.
