Hannaford customer wins 2008 Toyota Prius
Supermarket company gives away hybrid car in Nature’s Place promotion

SCARBOROUGH, Maine - A customer at a Hannaford store in North Quincy, Mass., didn’t have a car on his grocery list last month, but he ended up taking one home anyway, thanks to a recent promotion sponsored by Hannaford Supermarkets.

Jian Z. Tan of Quincy won a 2008 Toyota Prius hybrid as part of an Earth Day promotion for Nature’s Place, the Hannaford line of more than 300 organic and natural products.

"I feel very lucky," said Tan, who lives near the Hancock Street store and is a weekly Hannaford customer. "It was a wonderful surprise."

In fact, Tan and his wife, Qi Li Tan, were considering buying a new car until they learned they’d won the Prius, which is valued at around $24,000, sports a gasoline engine and electric motor, and gets 45 miles per gallon.

Nancy Dumais, marketing manager at Hannaford, says the car reflects the company’s eco-friendly philosophy.

"Hannaford is proud to take a leading role when it comes to improving our environment," Dumais said. "This donation of a hybrid car aligns well with our Nature’s Place brand and our company as a whole."

Hannaford, the largest certified organic supermarket in the Northeast, ran the Nature’s Place promotion in its 165 stores from April 6 through Earth Day, April 22. Every customer who purchased a Nature’s Place item during that period received a free reusable shopping bag and also had the option to sign up for a drawing to win the Prius, provided by Prime Toyota-Scion in Saco.

"From its excellent fuel mileage to its super-low emissions, the Toyota Prius is the car to be driving on Earth Day and every day," said Ira Rosenberg, owner of Prime Motor Group. "It’s a great car for drivers who want to significantly reduce their carbon footprint."
