Hannaford Donates $125,000 to Food Banks Across Five States
Supermarket company will deliver $1 million in community support this winter
Scarborough, Maine – Hannaford Supermarkets today announced that it will donate $125,000 to local food banks to fight hunger. The direct donation begins a Hannaford effort to deliver more than $1 million in community support in fives states from special promotions now through the holidays.
“Higher energy costs and economic conditions generally this winter are expected to challenge people trying to meet essential needs,” said Michael Norton, Hannaford spokesperson. “This donation represents our pride this year in celebrating 125 years serving customers and kicks off a challenge we’ve set for ourselves to deliver more community support as the holidays approach.”
In Maine, a direct donation of $25,000 will go to Good Shepherd Food Bank. Last year, Good Shepherd distributed 11.7 million pounds of donated and purchased food to more than 620 food pantries, soup kitchens and other partnering food relief organizations across Maine. Of this total, Hannaford donated more than 6.2 million pounds of food.
“For more than 25 years, Hannaford Supermarkets has been a mainstay of our work to feed Maine’s hungry,” said Rick Small, executive director of Good Shepherd. “This gift is so timely as we prepare for what may be an especially hard winter for the people we serve.”
Donations in other states will go to the Northeastern New York Regional Food Bank, the Vermont Food Bank, the Food Bank of New Hampshire and the Greater Boston, Worcester, Merrimack Valley and Western Massachusetts food banks.
