Ingredients

6 apples, such as Gala, peeled, cored, and cut into 1/2" wedges
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup orange juice
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking powder
4 Tbsp. unsalted butter, diced small and chilled
2/3 cup brown sugar
1 large egg
1/4 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
Apple Streusel

Directions

1. Heat oven to 375 degrees. In a large bowl, toss apples with granulated sugar, orange juice, and cinnamon until coated and transfer to a lightly greased 8x8" baking dish.
2. To make the streusel, sift flour and baking powder into a medium bowl. Using your fingers, blend butter into flour mixture until it reaches a crumbly consistency. Add brown sugar, egg, and walnuts (if using) to bowl with flour mixture and mix until combined.
3. Pinch streusel into pieces and scatter evenly over apples. Bake until apples are tender and streusel is golden brown, about 45 minutes.
