The History of Marquis Farm: The story of Marquis Farm begins in 1887, when Pierre Marquis arrived in northern Maine from Quebec. Of French Acadian ancestry, Pierre was part of a wave of determined settlers who followed the fertile lands of the Saint John River Valley, drawn by its promise for farming and a new beginning. With resilience and hard work, Pierre established a modest farm along the riverbanks, raising potatoes and livestock on the rich soil that would define the family's livelihood for generations. The valley, known for its unique combination of cool climate, long daylight hours, and nutrient-rich earth, proved especially suited for potato farming. Over time, this region became recognized as one of the premier potato-growing areas in the United States. Through changing times - mechanization, market shifts, and evolving agricultural practices - the farm remained in the hands of the Marquis family. Each generation built upon the work of the last, preserving a deep connection to the land while adapting to modern farming techniques. Today, five generations later, Marquis Farm is operated by Nathan Marquis, who continues the family tradition with pride and innovation. The farm now cultivates approximately 100 acres of chipping-type potatoes, carefully grown to meet the high standards required for premium products such as Taste of Maine Kettle Chips. These potatoes are prized for their quality, flavor, and consistency, attributes rooted in the valley's exceptional growing conditions. Looking ahead, this family legacy is set to continue with the next generation. Ben Marquis represents the future of the farm, carrying forward over a century of dedication to agriculture, family, and the land. From its humble beginnings in 1887 to its place in modern agriculture today, Marquis Farm stands as a testament to perseverance, heritage, and the enduring richness of the Saint John River Valley.
