Bar Harbor Hannaford certified as environmentally friendly building

SCARBOROUGH, Maine – The Hannaford Supermarket & Pharmacy in Bar Harbor has been recognized for its efforts to protect the environment with certification through the prestigious Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program.

Hannaford made numerous environmental improvements to the store as part of a renovation project completed last year. The supermarket cut its energy use by more than 40 percent, making changes such as the introduction of a system for reclaiming heat generated by refrigeration equipment.  This heat is used to keep the store warm during the winter.

“The people who live in the Mount Desert region care about the environment and appreciate the work that went into making their Hannaford supermarket even more sustainable,” said Store Manager Jay Boyce.  “As neighbors of Acadia National Park and residents of a naturally beautiful region, all of the associates at the Bar Harbor Hannaford are proud of the LEED certification and the sustainability efforts it recognizes.”

Several aspects of how the store was renovated and how it operates every day also received points from the U.S. Green Building Council, which issues LEED certifications nationwide.  These include:

• Efforts to reduce waste through active recycling practices
• Cuts in electric use, with the introduction of equipment such as motion-sensitive and high-efficiency lighting systems
• Use of materials and practices that cut down on the environmental impact of the renovation project and the building itself

Bar Harbor is Hannaford’s fifth supermarket to be LEED certified.  The others are Cony Street in Augusta, Maine; Duanesburg, N.Y.; Bennington, Vt.; and Skowhegan, Maine.

In January, the Maine Department of Environmental Protection also certified nine Hannaford stores in western and central Maine as Environmental Leaders for their voluntary efforts to reduce their environmental impact and called Hannaford “the leading green grocer in Maine.”  Hannaford stores in South Portland and on Cony Street in Augusta also have received this recognition.

In 2009, Hannaford opened a store on Cony Street in Augusta that was certified as the first LEED platinum supermarket in the world.  This store has served as a learning laboratory for other Hannaford supermarkets across the Northeast.
