Hannaford Helps Schools contributes more than $750,000 in five states

SCARBOROUGH, Maine – Hannaford Supermarkets today announced that the 12th annual Hannaford Helps Schools program raised more than $750,000 to benefit students in five states.

The funds helped hundreds of schools purchase of needed items such as computers, sporting equipment and playground gear.  Overall, the program raised $778,876 and contributed to more than 2,600 schools in Vermont, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, aine and New York.

“Hannaford Helps Schools makes it possible for schools to provide something extra, at a time when most districts are facing difficult budget choices,” said Eric Blom, Hannaford spokesman.  “Educators can be creative in using the funds provided through Hannaford Helps Schools. They decide for themselves how to use the contribution to best serve their students and their community.”

Hannaford customers generated donations for their local school by purchasing participating products between Sept. 4 and Dec. 3, 2011.  These customers received “school dollars” and deposited them in collection towers at their local Hannaford, where they directed the funds to the school of their choice.

In addition, each supermarket provided a $1,000 bonus to the school that generated the most donations in its area.  The top fundraising schools in each of the five states in which Hannaford does business received the following donations:

Massachusetts: Our Lady of the Assumption School (Lynnfield) -- $2,601

New Hampshire: Spaulding High School (Rochester) -- $2,482

Maine: Buxton Center Elementary School (Buxton) -- $2,326

New York: Highland High School (Highland) -- $2,698

Vermont: Georgia Elementary School (St. Albans) -- $2,281

“Once again this year, our customers made a real contribution to their local schools and communities through Hannaford Helps Schools,” Blom said.  In 12 years, the program has raised more than $7.5 million to benefit local schools.
