Hannaford to sponsor Portland bag give-away

Scarborough, Maine – The two Hannaford Supermarkets stores in Portland will bag all groceries in free reusable totes, unless an individual requests a disposable bag, from March 29 to April 14, to help customers prepare for the upcoming municipal bag fee.
Beginning April 15, Hannaford and many other retailers in Portland will be required to charge customers 5 cents for each disposable paper or plastic bag used.  There is no fee associated with reusable bags.

The bags being provided in advance of the fee are durable Hannaford's Fight Hunger totes. Every time Hannaford gives away or sells one of these bags, the company donates 25 cents to hunger relief. The bag giveaway will trigger donations to hunger relief in Portland specifically.

Hannaford also announced today that proceeds of the fee itself will be donated to hunger relief in Portland.

"Hannaford is committed to making this program work well and smoothly for customers," said Eric Blom, Hannaford spokesman. "Sustainability and hunger relief are both focus areas for Hannaford, and we see this municipal fee as an opportunity to contribute even more in those two areas."

Hannaford's Portland stores are located at 295 Forest Avenue and 787 Riverside Street.  Each has a full-service pharmacy.
