New York girl is winner of design contest for reusable shopping bags
Scarborough, Maine – A television with legs and a broad-smiling light switch are among the colorful designs created by the winners this year’s shopping-bag design contest for children at Hannaford Supermarkets.

The company announced today that Alyssa Lindheimer of Stephentown, N.Y. is the overall design-contest winner.  Hundreds of children aged 7 to 13 from Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York and Massachusetts participated in this year’s contest.  Her design, along with those of four other state winners, will appear on reusable shopping bags in all 184 Hannaford stores.

Hannaford sponsors the contest annually to promote the use of reusable shopping bags and to encourage sustainability. Five designs – one from each state -- appear on every bag.  The overall winning illustration, drawn by Alyssa, is shown at right.

“These fun, colorful designs remind us that we can work together to care for the planet,” said Molly Tarleton, community relations specialist.  “The artists who participated in this year’s contest displayed incredible creativity and passion around sustainability.”

Hannaford is a leader within the supermarket industry, in its commitment to sustainable business practices.  The company composts, recycles and diverts three quarters of its waste, compared to 40 percent for the industry as a whole.  Hannaford also builds and operates its stores to reduce energy consumption and decrease the company’s carbon footprint.

The state winners for this year’s design contest were:
New York (and overall): Alyssa Lindheimer, 11, Stephentown
Vermont: Justin Aker, 12, North Chittenden
New Hampshire: Chloe Degraffe, 12, Portsmouth
Maine: Golda Morse, 9, Falmouth
Massachusetts: Patrick Lambe, 10, South Weymouth

Hannaford today also announced the start of its 2015 design-a-bag contest, with the theme “Hannaford of the Future.”  Children aged 7-13 are being asked to draw a picture depicting Hannaford in the year 2064. Winners receive a $100 gift card. The official entry form for the 7th annual Earth Day reusable bag design contest may be downloaded from www.hannaford.com and must be returned to your local Hannaford by Saturday, May 31.
