Hannaford Charitable Foundation Awards $100,000 to Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine
PORTLAND, MAINE – The Hannaford Charitable Foundation recently awarded Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine $100,000 to support their $3 million capacity campaign. Funds raised will help the Clubs serve more children during the next seven years, with additional staffing, new programs, enhanced transportation and other services in Greater Portland and Lewiston/Auburn.

“Hannaford is committed to supporting healthy communities and to meeting the needs of our children,” said Heather Paquette, Regional Vice President of Hannaford Supermarkets and a Board Member for the Clubs. “We are thrilled that this gift to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine will help that organization serve more young people in the years ahead.”

Hannaford has been a consistently major supporter of Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine for nearly 100 years. Ed Hannaford, president of the Portland Boys Club Association from 1919-1941, spearheaded the Clubs’ first capital campaign to build the flagship downtown Portland Clubhouse in 1931 as a state-of-the-art facility at the time.

“Connections have run deep ever since,” said the Clubs’ CEO Bob Clark. “Hannaford support has included a major gift to our last capital campaign in 2001, resulting in significant renovations to our Portland Clubhouse and an expansion of our South Portland Clubhouse. Hannaford has helped Boys & Girls Clubs make a positive impact on the lives of countless young people over the years, in Greater Portland and Lewiston/Auburn.”

Currently, Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine serves more than 2,600 children and teens a year with more than 500 members attending their five locations each day. In order to serve more members, serve them better and with greater impact, Club board and staff leaders launched the Great Futures Campaign in 2013 to position the organization to do just that – have a meaningful impact on more young people in our communities – particularly for children and teens who are in dire need of out-of-school programs, safe places, guidance and support with graduating and building bright futures.
