Hannaford Contributes $50,000 toward Maine homeless shelter

Hannaford Supermarkets recently donated $50,000 to the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter, which it will use to provide emergency shelter and supportive services to men and women who are without homes or at risk.

“This is the largest corporate gift we’ve ever received,” said Boyd A. Kronholm, executive director of the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter. “Hannaford Supermarkets’ donation, their support of our annual 'Hike for the Homeless' fundraising event, and their assistance in stocking our food pantry, is making our community a better place.”

In 2017, the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter provided temporary housing for 347 overnight guests. As part of their mission to eliminate homelessness, 102 of these guests were placed into permanent, stable housing - a nine percent increase over the previous year.

The Shelter also works to address food insecurity. In 2017, the Shelter served nearly 10,500 meals to the needy in their soup kitchen while supplying 472 households with food through the organization’s food pantry.

The need for assistance with this effort, however, is not decreasing. Reduced government funding is making private donations all the more essential. Gifts from organizations like Hannaford Supermarkets help ensure that the Shelter can continue to provide essential services, staff and facilities.

"Making sure that each of our neighbors has enough nutritious food to eat and a safe place to live is vital not only to those individuals but also to the health of our community," said Hannaford Director of Operations Tim Hayden.  "Hannaford is proud to support the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter in helping to meet these basic needs locally. We believe that we can eliminate hunger and homelessness in Maine, if we work together."

“Too many members of our community are in need of a clean, safe place to stay, a hot meal, and other supportive services,” continued Kronholm. “Hannaford’s generosity is helping to sustain our ongoing efforts to provide food, shelter, crisis intervention, and connections to services, including medical and psychiatric care.”
